As the weather warms up and our spring showers continue to fall, I am often asked about what to do with all this mint.
Mint is in the Lamiaceae family. It currently consists of over 3,200 species around the world. To identify this family take notice of the square stem which is indicative of the Lamiaceae family. They have opposite leaves and range from small shiny leaves (as in ‘Chocolate’ Mint) to larger fuzzy leaves like that of the ‘Apple’ Mint.
Of course, the most recognizable characteristic to many is the pungent fragrance of the aromatic mint itself. The aroma always seems to remind me of my dad chewing Wrigley’s gum. Silly, but it has made it easier to identify spearmint vs. sweet mint. Wrigleys has both flavors
However, the more important question and answer is how do I control it?
